VRay Dongle

Up

So how does it work?

The new V-Ray licensing system works exactly as it has been working in the past with some changes that we will now explain.

Same as before, we have a license server. Up to now, the license server was called the VRLServer.exe and it had to be either placed in the Windows startup folder, or started manually by the current user every time one would like to use V-Ray. At present, the license server is called the VRLService.exe and it provides the licenses over the network as it used to do in the past. The difference is that it can be run as a SERVICE, too, which means that it can start and run without the need of logging-in and  launching it manually. It can be started automatically on-boot prior to users’ logging-in.

Another difference is that the VRLService.exe needs a dongle in order to operate. It needs the dongle to start (which means that the dongle has to be plugged-in when the service is starting) and then it needs the dongle to read the license from it. If the dongle is removed while the server is running, the server will continue to work for a few more minutes, but then it will stop serving the licenses. If a dongle is plugged-in on the fly, the server will discover it in a minute or two and will start to provide licenses again. The service need not be restarted in these cases, unless the customers want to catch up with the licenses immediately, instead of waiting for the automatic discovery.

The dongles use WIBU drivers to operate. The V-Ray installation has incorporated these WIBU drivers in it (the installation first asks for the hardware lock - see Reference 1), so that whenever V-Ray is installed, the wizard asks you whether to install the WIBU drivers for the dongles or not (see Reference 2). Please make sure the check-box of the WIBU drivers for the dongles is marked. This would assure their automatic installation. The WIBU drivers are also available from the site of WIBU-Systems AG and can be downloaded freely at http://wibu.com. In this case, during V-Ray installation, there is no need to check the box of the WIBU drivers. Please remember that the WIBU drivers must be running in order for the dongle to be operative.
